Parishes and churches.
The diocesan web site lists more than 40 parishes with over 90 churches. Discovering the
geographical location of a particular church can be quite difficult, especially if you
don't know which parish it is in. The task is even more difficult for the many people
who are seeking their roots or tracing their ancestry using a computer and the internet,
perhaps from their home in a distant land.
So we have provided a map that gives the location of every church in the diocese. It is
a Google map like the ones on the HOME page and the CONTACT US page, and we have given
some instructions below on how to take advantage of the many features of these maps, such
as "Street View" which enables you to have a look at the actual church from nearby in the
street without leaving your chair. In the table below we have provided a list of the
churches in each parish of the diocese together with a "LOCATOR" column which is useful
for finding the church you want.
How to find a particular church.
- If you know the name of the church (let's say it's St. James) or the name of the parish or the place where it is situated (Ballinameela, Co. Waterford), you should look in the three columns of the table below for "James" or for "Ballinameela". When you find it you should note the name in the LOCATOR column (Ballinameela) as it will be useful for the next step. Note that the name of the parish (Aglish) is often not the same as the name of the LOCATOR or the town or the church.
- You should now go to the Google map and search the left column for the name of the LOCATOR (in this example, Ballinameela occurs near the top of the column as "Ballinameela (and Aglish and Mount Stuart)", all underlined. The latter two names are LOCATORS for the other two churches in the parish. The name and address of the church (St. James, Ballinameela, Co. Waterford) appears under the LOCATORS.
- If you now click on the underlined LOCATORS, a text box will open which points to a coloured balloon on the map. The lower, pointed end of the balloon is the location of the church. At the left edge of the map is a graduated stick with a yellow man on top. You can click on the + and - signs at the ends of the stick to zoom in or out of the map. A balloon with a black dot in its centre represents one church of a parish having more than one church. All the churches in a parish have the same coloured balloon with a black dot. A balloon without a black dot represents a single-church parish.
- If you don't know the name of the church, parish, or place, you are up against it! All you can do is to move around on the map (click and hold anywhere on the map and drag the map around, or zoom in and out) until you find something meaningful. If you click on a balloon, its text box will open up and you can read the name of the LOCATOR(S) and the name and address of the church.
Using Google's "Street View".
- In the lower right corner of a balloon's text box is the word "more" in blue with a small down-arrow. Click the down-arrow, then click the words "Street View". The map will turn into a wide-angle photograph which should be looking straight at the church. You can click/drag the photograph so as to change the view, and you can zoom in/out using the +/- signs.
- If you move the mouse pointer around on the photograph, without clicking anything, a pair of white arrows should appear that show the direction the Google car took when it was taking the photographs. If you click one of these arrows you will change the viewing point and, if you keep on clicking the white arrows you can head off down the street.
- Or you can go back to the map by clicking the - sign and then click/drag the wee yellow man. As you drag him a small, greenish, dotted circle travels with him and all the streets where the Google car has been are highlighted in blue. If you deposit the greenish circle on any highlighted street, you will enter Street View at that location. Have fun!
